The first edition of Markham’s anthology of polar exploration, inscribed by the author to Admiral Alexander Milne. Markham served as President of the Royal Geographical Society and helped to organize the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-04. He was a mentor to Robert Falcon Scott, and godfather to the explorer’s children. Arctic Bib. 10949.

Octavo (220 x 140mm). 8 lithographic maps, 5 of which colored; 2 in-text wood engravings (some light offsetting of lithographs). Original purple cloth by Burn & Co. Provenance: Admiral Sir Alexander Milne G.C.B. (1806-1896, British Navy officer who fought for trade protections and captured slavers in the West Indes; presentation inscription) – Franklin Brooke-Hitching (his sale, Sotheby’s 19 March 2015, lot 851).
