The rare first edition, in the original wrappers and complete with the large map charting the course of the seventeen principal expeditions considered by this survey. WorldCat locates no copy worldwide; RBH and ABPC record no copy having been offered at auction. Shokal’skii was also a noted oceanographer, whose work in that field underlined the connection between weather and marine phenomena; he later became chairman of the Russian Geographical Society (1917-1931).

Octavo (238 x 155mm). Folding chromolithographed map by A. Il’in after Shokal’skii (tiny chip in the title margin). Original drab wrapper, the upper side printed in black (long tear, neatly repaired, in the upper side; light wear at the extremities). Provenance: Wayfarer’s Bookshop.
