The Henry Schoolcraft - Edward Ayer copy of a first edition Pacific Northwest classic. Swan settled in the Northwest in 1852, just six years after the boundary treaty between Great Britain and the U.S. Graff 4046; Howes S-1164; Smith 10044; Tweney 74.

Octavo (192 x 122mm). 4-pp advertisements at end. Frontispiece, numerous full-page wood-engravings, folding map. Publisher's blind-stamped cloth (rebacked with faded original spine preserved, tape repair to r.f.e.). Provenance: Henry Schoolcraft, 1793-1864, the noted ethnographer and geographer (ownership signature dated Washington, August 12, 1857) – Edward Everett Ayer, 1841-1927 (presentation bookplate to) – Newberry Library (bookplate, shelf label and small deaccession label) – Louis Javete, Seattle – PBA Galleries (30 October 1997, lot 659).
