ZAGOSKIN, Lavrentii Alekseevich (1808-1890). Peshekhodnaia opis chasti russkikh vladenii v Amerike v 1842, 1843 I 1844 godakh. [A Survey on Foot of Parts of the Russian Possessions in America.] St. Petersburg: Karl Krai, 1847-1848.

The first edition of Zagoskin’s “truly remarkable achievement” (Lada-Mocarski): Zagoskin’s expedition covered on foot, in just eighteen months, about 3000 miles of inland Northern Alaska, in the region encompassed by the Yukon and Kuskovkim rivers, and Norton Sound. He describes in detail the Russian trading posts along the way, and the customs of local Eskimo and Indian inhabitants. RBH and ABPC record only one copy having sold at auction: the Streeter copy (Parke-Bernet Galleries, 22-23 April 1969, lot 3521, $475). According to the Streeter catalogue, “the map must be one of the first, if not the first printed map of the interior of Alaska along the lower courses of the Yukon”. Arctic Bib. 19781; Howes Z-1; Lada-Mocarski 130; Streeter sale 3521; Tourville 5019; Wickersham 5904.

Two parts in one volume, octavo (215 x 145mm). Publisher’s stamp on the titles. Engraved folding map; eight folding letterpress tables included in the collation (map re-hinged and with small marginal repairs, light wear at the folds; some scattered spotting in the text, mainly in part 1). Contemporary Russian half sheep over orange marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, edges sprinkled blue (spine evenly faded, small chip at spine head; extremities lightly rubbed; sides lightly scuffed). Provenance: pressmarks in pencil and pen on the front endpapers (“G 5 4/20”) – Stephen Lunsford, bookseller.
