Lot Essay

Derek Webster, a lovely, gentle man of Haitian descent, lived in Chatham, an African-American neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. He enjoyed showing visitors around his yard, which was full of sculptural assemblages made from mundane materials. As he described his practice, Webster's attachment to each artwork was easy to discern. - M.F.
