Displaying the refinement of the Classical style, this superbly crafted pembroke table exemplifies the style and design of one of early America’s most renowned cabinetmakers, Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854). A nearly identical documented pembroke table furnished the home of wealthy New York City dry-goods merchant James Lefferts Brinckerhoff (see Peter M. Kenny and Michael K. Brown, Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York (New Haven, 2011), pp. 184-187). The canted corners on the drop-leaves above four beautifully turned and carved supports with ebonized and waterleaf-carved gilt legs are almost nearly identical to that of the Brinckerhoff table in both design and construction (see Peter M. Kenny and Michael K. Brown, pp. 186-187, pl. 19). Surviving in remarkable pristine condition, these elegant details are shown to their full effect.
