Lot Essay

Of highly desirable proportions, this serpentine-front chest-of-drawers is virtually identical in design, size and brass use to an example branded, E. HUSE, most likely a reference to its first owner (Sotheby's, New York, The Collection of Roy and Ruth Nutt, 23 January 2015, lot 257). While this individual has not been confirmed, the 1790 US Federal Census records numerous Huse family members living in Essex County, Massachusetts and with drawer bottoms with grain running from side to side, the chest's construction suggests an Essex County rather than Boston origin.
