tapered cylindrcial with molded base band, the flat-domed cover with shaped peak and scroll thumbpiece, scroll handle applied with baluster drop and oval terminal, handle engraved with block initials M*P, the underside engraved MARGARET*PLATT, marked on both sides of handle IBV in an oval, underside scratched Silver Making £0-18 = 8 / 2-10 / £38=8 and 1748

The monogram on the handle is that of Margaret Platt (1728-1791), first child of Uriah Platt (1707-1762) and his wife Mary Smith (b. 1709) of Hempstead, Long Island. She married Judge Isaac Smith (1722-1795), also of Hempstead, Long Island, on 2 January 1744. The couple relocated to Duchess County, NY in 1757 and had eleven children.
