by J.H.Evans, 17 Oxford Street, London, No. 1296, with double mahogany frame (with added brace), iron bed, treadle, crank and flywheel, double standard overhead; screw mandrel headstock with starnut and six screw-hobs, brass pulley with eight-row division plate, tangent screw and segment apparatus; boring collar and stand; screw-barrel tailstock; hand-rest base and tailstock; hand-rest base and three tees; rectilinear chuck; thirty-one cup chucks and twenty-six work chucks; late 13-inch ornamental slide rest signed Holtzapffel, with fluting stops, cradle, bolt, clamp, bow-nut, original curvilinear rubber, user-made curvilinear supports and keys, in user-made chest; a large user-made slope till-top cabinet with three drawers containing 104 slide-rest tools, 144 cutting-frame cutters, thirty-three large drills with matching drill spindle and sixty-seven small drills; an eccentric cutting frame with key; a steel centring device; and various keys, spanners and other accessories -- 42in. wide, 80in. high overall, 30in. deep, mandrel nose 1in. x 9 t.p.i.

Lot Essay

Although detailed records of Evans lathes do not exist, the combination of number and address indicate that this is one of the last made, probably about 1900. A previous owner was Sir Mark Collet (d. 1942); it is understood to have had very little use since that date.
