MEZCALA FIGURAL GROUP, TYPE M22

The kneeling figure is one of the few portrayed carrying a diminutive recumbent figure on its back, perhaps an infant, legs sharply bent with square-shaped feet flexed, the arms tightly wrapped around the chest and highly abstracted facial features; in dark green lustrous serpentine.

“Figures with infants, although scattered throughout various stages of the Mezcala tradition, are exceedingly rare. They are, perhaps, the most intriguing of the composite human representations.” (Gay and Pratt 1992: 122)

Cet exemplaire est l’une des rares représentations de personnage qui porte un élément de petite taille dans le dos, peut être un enfant, et qui est à genoux avec des pieds repliés de forme carrée, des bras qui enserrent fermement la poitrine et un rendu très stylisé des traits faciaux.

"Les personnages avec des enfants sont extrêmement rares, quoique présents à diverses périodes de l’art Mezcala. Ils sont peut être les plus fascinantes parmi les représentations humaines composites" (Gay and Pratt: 1992, pg. 122).
