MEZCALA SERPENTINE ANIMAL EFFIGY

Though highly stylized and carved in silhouette with the spiky dorsal and caudal spines, these zoomorphic pendants are considered as representations of iguanas, probably the indigenous Mexican Iguana rhinolpha.The present example is the largest of such reptilian effigies.

Les sculptures animalières de profil très stylisées et très travaillées de ce type, avec des épines dorsales et costales sont considérées comme des représentations d’iguanes, et plus particulièrement de l’espèce locale mexicaine Iguana rhinolpha. Le modèle présenté ici est le plus grand qui soit connu à ce jour.
