Lot Essay

The motif of a six-pointed star encompassing a floral motif appears on tiles decorating the walls of the Ghars al-Din al-Khalil al-Tawrizi mosque (d. 1430) in Damascus (John Carswell, 'Six Tiles', in Richard Ettinghausen (ed.), Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1972, plate 5, p.114). Another tile of this motif sold at Christie's South Kensington, 27 April 2012, lot 155
