The gold surface with diamond-set mirrored letters 'ayn and ya at the centre set with a small crescent, further diamonds and bands of green enamel around the edges, a small sapphire set into the opening, in fitted leather case

Lot Essay

A gold cigarette case dated to the Period of Mehmed V, elegantly inset with diamonds and emeralds forming the tughra of the Sultan, was very probably made by the same workshop as the present case (see E. Grünberg and E.M.Torn, Four Centuries of Ottoman Taste, exhibition catalogue, London, 1988, cat.51).
