Jean Philippe Imberton copied the Islamic patterns found on ceramics, glass and metal which Philippe-Joseph Brocard revived when copying Mamluk originals. Imberton worked as a designer for Appert Frères in Clichy circa 1878. His own atelier, Imberton et Cie, was located at 19 Rue Rochechouart and exhibited a selection of his works at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889.
Comparable doors by Jean Philippe Imberton were sold at Bonham’s, Los Angeles, 9 December 2013, lot 291. Our door is of the same series as one of a pair which sold at Christie’s New York, 18 November 2014, lot 39 and at Sotheby’s London, 19 October 2016, lot 336.
Imberton also produced similar glass doors with Hindu motifs. Such a work sold at Christie’s London, 25 May 2017, lot 126.
