Lot Essay

The design of the present carpet is filled with emblematic Chinese symbols rich in meaning, such as the cranes, butterflies, fruiting plum trees and incense burners. The bold snaking dragons that writhe around the border are symbols of wisdom, power, and luck in Chinese culture, while the Chinese character within the field, above and below the central infinite knot, represents the double xi – shuang xi, meaning 'double happiness' and is commonly used as a Chinese traditional ornament and symbol of marriage, making this carpet the perfect wedding gift.
