Ultimately derived from antique prototypes, these atheniennes are clearly inspired by Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine’s design for ‘Une anthenienne’, which was published in their ‘Recueil des Décorations Interieures’ of 1801. Various examples were executed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (d. 1843), and various other talented artists, with the supports and finials differing. The atheniene itself was re-discovered in 1773 by Jean Henri Ebert, Editor of the Monument du Costume, and can be seen on an engraving by J.J. Filipart entitled ‘La vertueuse Athenieune’.
