Maharana Jagat Singh II (r. 1734-51) was particularly devoted to his elephant stable with several paintings of elephants including processions, elephant fights and hunting scenes being commissioned during his reign (A. Topsfield, Court Painting at Udaipur, Zurich, 2001, p.188). The inscriptions identify the subject of our painting as Popdant, a favoured elephant from the royal stable ridden by the Maharaja himself.
