Lot Essay

Husayn Ali Khan Bahadur was Nawab of Banganapalle, a town in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India between 1769 and 1783. He belonged to the Naqdi Dynasty. He was granted the personal title of Khan Bahadur on 11 February 1765, succeeding as Jagirdar of Banganapalle on the death of his unmarried uncle on 7 April 1769. He died while returning to Banganapalle from Mysore on 26 August 1783 and was succeeded by his young son, Ghulam Muhammad Ali, with Ghulam's paternal uncle as regent. Given the absence of his Bahadur title in the portrait we can assume that the work was completed before 1765.
