“After the Allied victory of World War I, souvenirs of all shapes and form proliferated to celebrate this momentous event. Jewelers produced novelty items with symbolic representations of the newly won peace. Cartier in New York created this bracelet, made out of platinum, a metal that had been severely restricted during the war years. Three charms are suspended from an articulated bracelet structure; the central charm proclaiming the 1918 victory. A second charm is a family cluster comprised of mother, father and child figures. The third charm is a sentimental design consisting of a row of different gemstones whose initials spell out the word DEAREST (diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and topaz). The language of love expressed in stones was used to write the names of a loved one or convey a message, such as regard, love and dearest. This practice was popular in the 1820s and 30s, revived in the 1880s and continued into the early decades of the twentieth century.”
