Petr Samonov (b. 1863), mostly famous for his sculptures dedicated to the Russian Army, was born into a military family. Не did not have a formal fine art education, however, he became interested in sculpture and started working with bronze from 1884. Although Samonov was not a professionally trained artist, his model won the competition for the monument depicting General Mikhail Skobelev in 1910.

A comparable model of an Arab on a Camel was sold Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, 9 June 2017, lot 1488.
