The first edition of the first American-made geographical index of the United States. Scott's Gazetteer includes maps and detailed descriptions of all of the 15 states which were then part of the Union, plus Maine, the Northwest Territory ("the greatest part of this territory is the undisputed right of the Indians") and the Southwest Territory. Engraved title-page, 19 engraved folding maps, one of which is a large general map of the United States (browning and some foxing, few marginal repairs including to title, large map tissue-backed). Contemporary sheep (rubbed, spine head chipped, a little bowed, front free endpaper renewed). Provenance: H. Westlake (ownership inscription).
