羅漢床可坐臥依憑，歷來備受文人喜愛，常置於書齋廳堂。相異於北方居室中用於睡臥的「炕」，羅漢床除可作小憩之外，還可用於起居待客，促膝談心。古人若需長時休息，才會在架子床上大睡。根據明代木刻版畫所示，羅漢床還可放置室外，點綴亭臺樓閣。
相傳羅漢床是由漢代的榻演變而來，相關討論可參考S.
