Lot Essay
Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986), a prominent Yga-style Japanese painter of the Meiji period. He was born in Kyoto and first studied at the Syogoin Western-style Painting’s Institute in 1903. In 1906, he studied under Asai Chu with Yasui Sotaro at the Kansai Art School. From 1908 to 1913, he travelled to France, where he visited Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1909 and studied under him.
