BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS ARTADI ALAVA, ESPAÑABodegas ARTADI is today, undoubtedly, a reference point as one of the best Bodegas in Spain. This success is based on our daily work in the vineyards and the search of pure/honest wines tied to the history and the tradition of our ancestors. The seeds of this renowned winery started in 1981, when its current owner, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, together with this family and thirteen local growers founded a cooperative. The cooperative focused on the production of Carbonic Maceration wines, very traditional and popular in the Rioja Alavesa region. In 1992, the cooperative was dissolved and Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi de Laguardia, S.A. was established. Step by step during the last 37 years, they have set different challenges and reached goals to discover the great values that are hidden among the vineyards in the region.In 1990 they decided, being aware of the importance of the age of the vineyards, to select and produce a wine from the old Tempranillo vineyards that they owned in the region: the wine ARTADI Pagos ViejosIn 1991, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle produced the first vintage of his family’s single vineyard : Viña El Pisón In 1994, ARTADI Grandes Añadas was released, paying attention to the relevance and singularity of the best vintages. During these first years, they produced wines based around Villages, Plots and Vintages, very basic concepts, but very important and full of meaning. This has meant, at Artadi, these three pillars are used to produce wines tied to the Great Values and, consequently, to Great Wines. Nowadays, they manage 70 hectares of vineyards under organic farming. All their efforts are directed to the search of the personal character of small historical vineyards, which reflect unique wines. This respectful intervention in the vineyards improves the expression of the soils, which linked to the purity of the Tempranillo grape, reinforce the personal character of the wines. Definitely, we are talking about “Terroir” a concept that is full of meaning ARTADI wines. The wines take on the attributes of personality and identifying them with the true origin of Villages and Plots. They are products of their locality.“The many awards that the Specialist wine press has granted us in this nearly forty years, support our work for the search of the personality in the wines and position ARTADI, undeniably, as a cellar of reference in the development of Spanish viticulture and winemaking in the last decades.”Juan Carlos López de Lacalle 24th April 2018 THE WINES VIÑA EL PISÓNAfter all his life dedicated to the vine growing and the production of wine, in 1945 Mr. Jenaro San Pedro, made his personal and family dream come true by planting Viña El Pisón. The estate chosen was a piece of land close to the village, with a medieval mill in the centre, located in a natural amphitheatre; He then built a stone wall to get some privacy for him and his special relationship with his vines. In 1963 he passed away, at the age of eighty years old, but his dream did not end with him; his family continued it. In 1991, driven by this admiration to his grandfather, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle took up the torch to pay a tribute to him and produced Viña El Pisón.The balance between the natural factors that are part of the environment produce a wine full of subtle mineral character, pure fruit, delicate spicy hints and enveloping tannins. A wine with a surprising expression and energy. Natural elegance. ARTADI “PAGOS VIEJOS”The great balance of our old vineyards makes the authentic spirit of this wine: a low production, together with a painstaking elaboration and ageing of the wine within the barrel gives a result this colourful wine with complex aromas, good backbone and long finish.ARTADI “GRANDES AÑADAS”A wine only produced when the climatology and the quality balance of our best vineyards are combined – reaching perfection. Powerful and rich in sensation. Its complex and intense taste and aromatic notes, together with the enveloping tannins are its more remarkable attributes. I first visited Bodega Artadi back in the summer of 1998, Juan Carlos and Ana were as hospitable and welcoming then as they were on my last visit in March nearly twenty years later. In that time the winery has been completely transformed, and now almost near completion is the new barrel room, tasting room and dining area. The philosophy in relation to making wine has remained constant, absolute attention to detail and a desire to make a final wine that is a pure expression of the vineyard that produces it. The wines produced at Artadi are classic examples of Tempranillo in its most expressive, pure form. We are delighted to be able to bring to auction this superb offering released directly from the Bodega in Laguardia specifically for this sale. A real treat. Chris Munro.
