A PAIR OF CARVED RED LACQUER CIRCULAR BOXES AND COVERS
CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

拍品专文

The theme of 'boys at play', popularized by the Southern Song dynasty Court official, Su Hanchen (active early 12th century), continued into the Ming period when the decorative design became popular ceramics and lacquer ware. The motif of the young boys teasing each other is a charming scene found on other lacquer vessels including a polychrome lacquer tray carved with a 'hundred boys' at play illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 46 - Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, pp. 44-5, pl. 27.
