In 1960, he authored the first “European happening” in Venice: L’Enterrement de la « Chose » de Tinguely. Lebel was also a poet. He translated works by Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg in La Poésie de la Beat Génération. In 1960, he and Alain Jouffroy put on L’anti-Procès, an international exhibition protesting against the Algerian War. It was at this exhibition that the piece he had created with Baj, Dova, Crippa, Erró and Recalcati titled Grand Tableau Antifasciste Collectif caused a scandal and was ultimately censored. Lebel also organised several poetry festivals. In 1968, he joined the Mouvement du 22 Mars, then the anarchist group Noir et Rouge. Beginning in the 1980s, Lebel showed his work in museums, FRACs (regional contemporary art collections), foundations and galleries throughout Europe. In 2001, he put together a travelling exhibition titled Reliquaire pour un culte de Vénus. Then, in 2007, he produced a film on the process of morphing: Les Avatars de Vénus. The spirit of Jean-Jacques Lebel's work is best illustrated by the title of his 2014 exhibit at the ZKM Medium Museum of Karlsruhe: Il n'est d'art qu'insurrectionnel (There is no art without insurrection).
