shaped rectangular box, set with engine-turned panels stamped with flowerheads, with raised vari-colour gold foliate sablé borders set with diamonds, the cover centred with an enamel portrait miniature of Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916), in a diamond-set frame

Lot Essay

Franz Joseph was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, and monarch of other states in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from 1848 to his death. From 1850 to 1866 he was also President of the German Confederation. He was the longest-reigning Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary when he died on 21 November 1916, after ruling his domains for almost 68 years.
