Lot Essay

Tronchin, sometime physician to Voltaire, "demonstrated that the so-called "poitou colic", a disease first described by François Citois (1616), was caused by the city's drinking water passing over leaden roofs before being collected into cisterns. He was one of the first to show the causes of lead poisoning" (Norman).
