A CARVED GREENISH-GREY AND RUSSET JADE BOULDER
18TH CENTURY
The thick 'boulder' of irregular section is carved in high relief with a luohan wrapped in his voluminous robe seated on a woven mat in a deep grotto, with a leafy branch growing from the rock face above the opening and with a crane in flight to the side. The reverse is deeply carved with further branches growing from the mountain side. There are large areas of the russet skin that highlight the carving as well as opaque areas of creamy russet color.
9 ¼ in. (23.5 cm.) wide, cloth box
