A SMALL WHITE AND RUSSET JADE FIGURE OF TANZI
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The boy, Tanzi, is shown holding a bucket as he stands beneath a deer skin draped over his head and back. The white stone has areas of added russet color.
2 ¼ in. (5.7 cm.) high
Provenance
Lizzadro Collection, Elmhurst, Illinois, acquired prior to 1960.
Carvings of Tanzi represent filial piety, as the boy concealed himself under a deer skin as he mingled with the herd in order to obtain doe's milk for his ailing parent.
