Lot Essay

The sitter was the only daughter of Cosimo III de'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. She married Elector Johann Wilhelm II. She was the last lineal descent of the House of Medici. On her death she bequeathed the Medici's entire art collection, which included the contents of the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace, to the Tuscan state.
Two signed and dated portrait miniatures of 1706 of the present sitter and her husband by Benjamin Arlaud are in the Munich Nationalmuseum (see H. Buchheit, Katalog der Miniaturbilder im Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich, 1911, p. 76, nos. 352 & 353).
