The Residenz in Würzburg was the seat of the princely bishop Friedrich Carl von Schönborn from 1735 and the centre for stylistic develpments in the decorative arts for the whole region of Franken. The extravagant carving of the frame of this stool, featuring shells, foliage and dragons (or draco) is characteristic of the style of work that contributed to the spectacular interiors at The Residenz, and was thus popularised more widely.
