A SET OF FOUR GEORGE III SILVER ENTREE-DISHES AND COVERS ON OLD SHEFFIELD PLATED STANDS
THE DISHES AND COVERS WITH MARK OF THOMAS ROBINS, LONDON, 1808, THE STANDS WITH MARK OF MATTHEW BOULTON
The dishes with gadrooned border, the conforming domed covers with detachable leaf-cast handles, the stands on wood bun feet and with leaf capped scroll handles, the dishes and covers each engraved twice with a coat-of-arms, marked on dish, cover and under stands, the unmarked handles possibly associated
The stands 14 ¾ in. (37.5 cm.) wide over handles
263 oz. 16 dwt. (8,206 gr.)
The arms are those of Halliday impaling Harvie, for Simon Halliday (1758-1829) of Whinnyrig, co. Dumfries and his wife Elizabeth, only daughter of Thomas Harvie of Jamaica, whom he married in 1788. He was a surgeon in the Royal Navy and later a partner with his son in the bank Herries, Farquhar, Hallidays and Co., which pioneered an early form of traveller's cheque. The London office at 16 St. James's Street was on the corner of King Street. It was acquired by Lloyds Bank in 1893.
