The seal is finely carved at the top with a recumbent mythical beast with two horns, finely incised beard, mane and tail. The face of the seal is carved in raised characters, Zengxiang suo de jin shi (Epigraphy obtained by Zengxiang).

Lot Essay

Well-known for his knowledge of epigraphy (jinshi), the scholar-official Lu Zengxiang (1816-1882), obtained the title of zhuangyuan on the thirtieth year of the Daoguang reign (1850) for achiving the highest score on the highest level of the Chinese imperial examination.
