Lot Essay

A very similar vase from a private collection is illustrated by J. Curtis in Chinese Porcelains of the Seventeenth Century, Landscapes, Scholars' Motifs and Narratives, New York, 1995, pp. 48-49, no. 4. This comparable vase is decorated with a landscape with very similar treatment of the rocks to the present vase, and has a similar indentation on the center of the base. It also bears a poetic inscription with the date 1639.
