Lot Essay

One side features three aconstists, each holding a javelin, framed by two mantled trainers. The other has two fully armed warriors in combat framed by two others who both turn away, with a bearded man far left wearing a mantle with an unusual vertical battlements pattern. The same pattern is found on a mantled figure on a now-lost vase by the Swing Painter formerly on the Rome market, pl. 3B in E. Böhr, Der Schaukelmaler.
