The composition is based on Albrecht Dürer's woodcut of circa 1503-1504. The artist has, however, introduced several changes, including inverting the position of Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross and altering the background landscape as well as the breed and position of the dog at center.

It has been suggested that the painted coat-of-arms on the reverse of the panel is that of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II (1527-1576).
