AN INSCRIBED DREAMSTONE SCREEN
DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO 1938
The large rectangular dreamstone is smoothly crafted from marble of a creamy tone suffused with varying tones of brown and slate-grey inclusions reminiscent of a mountain range. The upper corner has an inscription stating that this piece was gifted by Mr Luo Desi to the French consul in Tianjin, Mr Li Bili, on 10 May 1938. The hongmu stand is carved with scrolling lotus above a bat in flight. The spandrels are finely carved with openwork coiled dragons.
