Jiang Zhaohe was a seminal, though often overlooked figure in the history of 20th century Chinese painting. His works are unrivalled in their integration of Western techniques of chiaroscuro and Chinese artistic idioms of ink painting. Jiang deploys this descriptive power in sensitive renderings of figural subjects, providing intimate portraits of figures from the fringes of society.
Mr. Kenneth Walker was a Royal Dutch Shell agent in North China from 1947 until 1949. He built a small but significant collection of works by Jiang Zhaohe during this time, many of them acquired directly from the artist.
