Lot Essay
The sofa table bears comparison to a pair of tables supplied by Gillows of Oxford Street in 1803 to Stephen Tempest for Broughton Hall, Yorkshire, also featuring the distinctive curved stretchers though the latter were fitted with games boards within the drawers (see Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 – 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, p. 264, pl. 268). A similar table was sold anonymously Christie’s, London, 24 April 2008, lot 122 (£17,300 including premium).
