Lot Essay

With its deeply-curved back, rosette carving to the rails and square-sectioned legs, this bold neo-classical fauteuil de bureau relates to a fauteuil – sharing the square-sectioned legs - from the Collection of Gilbert de la Rochefoucauld, duc de la Roche-Guyon, château de la Roche-Guyon, sold Sotheby’s house sale, 6-7 December 1987, lot 109. The latter was stamped by Claude Chevigny, who had become maître in 1768. Interestingly, the chateau was entirely refurnished in neo-classical style for the duchesse d’Enville (1716-’97) in 1764-‘69, indicating Chevigny was patronised by the duchesse in his first year as master chair-maker.
