Lot Essay

The audacious neo-classical design of this unusual pair of vases is based on a vase pattern included in the series of designs by Ennemond-Alexandre Petitot (1727-1801), which were published by Benigo Bossi (1727-1792) in Parma in 1764. A pair of vases of this design, of larger scale and in marblesculpted by Jean-Baptiste Boudard (1710-1768), formerly in the Palazzo Ducale of Parma, is now in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia (NGA 1991.1561.1-2).
