Lot Essay
Martin Carlin, maître ébéniste in 1766.
This elegant tricoteuse or vide poche is conceived in the elegant à l'anglaise style of the 1770's and 1780's, when influential English designers such as Thomas Sheraton often provided the inspiration for similar small, 'useful' pieces of furniture.
The genesis of this design with its distinctive dot trellis parquetry probably ultimately lies with a marchand mercier, as further examples are known to have been produced by other cabinet-makers such as Roger Vandercruse, Jean-Henri Riesener, Adam Weisweiler (for instance an example illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 870) and Bernard Molitor (see U. Leben, Bernard Molitor, exh. cat., Luxemburg, 1995, p. 18, fig. 4).
A related example by Martin Carlin is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 160. Another, by Carlin, previously in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Balfour, Balbirnie, Fife, Scotland, was sold at Christie's London, 29 June 1972, lot 4.
