Oblong with gadroon border and scroll and leaf handles, engraved in the centre with a coat-of-arms beneath an earl's coronet, marked on side, together with a modern trestle stand painted to simulate bamboo

The arms are those of Dudley quartering others, for John William Ward, 9th Baron Ward of Birmingham and 1st and last Earl of Dudley of Dudley Castle (1781-1833). Educated at Oriel College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford he sat at Tory M.P. for five different seats between 1802 and 1823. He served as foreign secretary from 1827 to 1828. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and took an active interest in the foundation of London University.
