Lot Essay

This magnificent black background painting portrays the tutelary deity Samvara in sexual union with his consort Vajravarahi trampling the Hindu gods Kalaratri and Bhairava reclining on a gold painted lotus dais. They are placed in a mountainous landscape. The upper register shows Buddha Shakyamuni in the centre flanked by two other manifestations of Samvara. The lower part has Sadbhujamahakala in the centre flanked by the buffalo-faced Yama and another, now seated, form of Samvara.
