Lot Essay

Cybèle, connue sous l’appellation de « Grande Mère des Dieux », était une déesse-mère d’Anatolie adoptée aussi bien par les Grecs que par les Romains. Invoquée comme symbole de maternité universelle, elle jouait le rôle de parent pour les dieux, les humains et les animaux. Comme le montre le présent lot, elle est généralement représentée conduisant un char tiré par deux lions, symbolisant sa domination sur la nature sauvage.



Cybele, known as the 'Great Mother of the Gods’, was an Anatolian mother goddess adopted by both the Greeks and Romans. Evoked as a symbol of universal motherhood, she served as the parent of gods, mortals, and beasts. As seen in the present lot, she is most often depicted driving a chariot drawn by two lions, symbolic of her dominion over wild nature.
