Lot Essay

Aîné d’une famille d’artistes d’Emilie Romagne, Ubaldo Gandolfi, l’une des grandes figures du baroque bolognais, travaille avec son frère cadet Gaetano avant de mourir prématurément en 1780. Le présent dessin est préparatoire au tableau signé et daté ‘U.G. F. 1775’ réalisé pour l’église San Giorgio de Castel Bolognese et se trouve toujours en place aujourd’hui (voir Gaetano e Ubaldo Gandolfi. Opere scelte, Cento, Ferrare, Auditorium San Lorenzo, 2002, no. 20). La Madone à l’Enfant qui tient la palme du martyre regarde de part et d’autre : saint Georges à gauche, le saint titulaire de l’église et saint François en prière à droite.
