Ingénieur de l'école des Ponts et Chaussées, Charles L'Eveillé est également artiste et poète. Après une mission à Constantinople pour l'aménagement du port militaire, il s'installe en Languedoc et à Caen avant d'achever sa carrière à Meaux à partir de 1802 pour réaliser les travaux du Canal de l'Ourcq et entre autres de la restauration des hospices de la ville. Cette aquarelle est un touchant témoignage de la vie quotidienne à Meaux au début du XIXe siècle.
A graduate in engineering from the École des Ponts et Chaussées, Charles L’Eveillé was also an artist and poet. After developing a military port at Constantinople, he moved to the Languedoc and then to Caen before continuing his career at Meaux from 1802 onward. Here he worked on the construction of the Canal de l’Ourcq as well as restoring houses. This watercolour is a touching account of everyday life in Meaux at the beginning of the 19th Century.
