gouache heightened with gold on paper in low relief and gem set, in a flowering meadow with a low hill and cloudy sky behind, a winged peri rides an elephant, whose body is composed of numerous animals and figures, behind a blue-skinned demon blowing a horn, blue and gold meandering vine margin, polychrome wide outer floral border, (negligible wear), India, by R.Sharma, 20th century - 15¾ x 20in. Lot Essay

Other paintings by the artist were sold in these Rooms, 26 October 1995, lots 325-7. The following eight lots are also by him.
This painting is a copy of one from the Delhi school painted in the first half of the 18th century used as a greeting card illustration. It was almost certainly inspired by similar late 16th century Mughal paintings, see: Okada, A.: Miniatures de L'Inde Imperial, Paris 1989, no.23, p.123 and Kramrisch, S.: Painted Delight, Philadelphia 1986, pl.18, p.21.
