The detailed painted vignettes of children playing games on an unusual nankin ground is typical of the output of this Paris manufactory and provides a fascinating insight into the types and range of games played by children in France at the end of the 18th century. For further discussion of Dihl et Guerhard's production, and their development of new ground colours see Régine de Plinval de Guillebon, Paris Porcelain 1770-1850, London, 1972, pp. 202-207. A vase with the same type of decoration is illustrated by Régine de Plinval de Guillebon, Faience et Porcelaine de Paris XVIIIe - XIXe Siècles, Dijon, 1995, p. 355, no. 336.
In 1863 Marquise Leonia degli Albizi, the last heiress of an ancient Florentine family, married Marquis Angelo Frescobaldi in Florence.
Leonia (1834-1925) was born in Auxerre, into a branch of the family exiled in the 16th century by the Medici family. The present service is part of the dowry Leonia gave to her husband, Angelo.
